If you're a wholesaler, the damage is worse. A retail chain that returns 30 units doesn't just want their money back. They want to know why you wasted their shelf space. Lose two retail accounts this year because of returns, and you're not looking at a bad quarter — you're looking at a business problem.

A fingerprint lock built for a 6068 mortise cutout will not fit an American tubular deadbolt hole. Period.
What makes this worse: many Alibaba listings show a "standard" smart lock without specifying which standard they mean. A buyer in Kenya orders 200 units thinking "standard" means it'll fit Kenyan doors. The factory shipped what's standard in China. Neither side asked the right questions.
What you should do before ordering:
- Get actual door measurements from your market — thickness, backset, cross bore diameter, and frame type. Not "standard door." Numbers in millimeters.
- Send those measurements to the factory and ask them to confirm compatibility in writing.
- Order samples and physically test them on at least three different doors in your target market before committing to bulk.
- Ask if the lock supports adjustable latches. A 60/70mm adjustable backset latch covers way more door types than a fixed 60mm.
2. The Battery Died Too Fast (Or the Lock Went Offline)
This one drives customers insane. They spent $200 on a smart lock, and three months later it's a dumb lock because the batteries are dead or the WiFi disconnected.
The root issue is usually the wireless module, not the battery itself. A lock using direct WiFi draws significantly more power than one using Bluetooth Low Energy connected to a gateway. I've seen locks billed as "WiFi smart locks" that chew through four AA batteries in six to eight weeks under normal use. The customer doesn't know the difference between BLE and WiFi. - Prefer BLE + gateway solutions over direct WiFi for most markets. The gateway plugs into wall power and handles the heavy lifting. The lock itself only needs to maintain a low-energy Bluetooth connection.
- Ask what happens when WiFi drops. Does the lock still work locally? Can you still unlock with a fingerprint or PIN when the internet is down? If the answer is no, avoid that model entirely.
3. The Installation Was Too Complicated
This one hits different markets differently. In the US and Northern Europe, a significant percentage of buyers install locks themselves. In the Middle East and parts of Southeast Asia, they typically hire a technician. Either way, if the installation takes more than 30 minutes or requires tools most people don't own, returns spike.

- Lock body type: deadbolt, mortise, rim lock, or glass door clamp. Don't assume — confirm with photos.

- Certifications for your market: CE is usually not enough. Some Middle Eastern countries require SASO. Some European retailers want GDPR compliance documentation for the app. US importers need FCC Part 15.
- Installation complexity: Watch the video. Read the manual. Count the steps. If it takes more than 15 minutes for a first-time user, returns will be higher.
- Sample testing protocol: Test on at least three different doors before bulk. One door is not a representative sample.
